WORKS IN THE EXHIBITION

Highlight

John Baldessari
(1931…, California)

American conceptual artist known for his work featuring found photography and appropriated images. He lives and works in Santa Monica and Venice, CA.
He has created thousands of works that demonstrate—and, in many cases, combine—the narrative potential of images and the associative power of language within the boundaries of the work of art. His art has been featured in more than 200 solo exhibitions in the U.S. and Europe: Tate, MOMA, etc. His work has had a huge influence on Cindy Sherman, David Salle, and Barbara Kruger among others.

Baldessari’s use of colour involves seemingly arbitrary but internally logical systems. In "Six Colorful Inside Jobs" John Baldessari draws a parallel between a double process of life and creation. The video shows a room being painted in six different colors, each color of the spectrum corresponding to a day of the week.
This work, which started as a performance/installation, integrates the artist as a comic figure faced with contemporary history 'that of American painting' and shifts his function toward that of a house painter. Through this form of irony, Baldessari shows to what extent instruments and materials help him define the subtle limits between art and work, art and life.
Note: Be patient when watching the moovie. The initial sequence gives immediately the 1D/3D vision that colour introduces in the white room (JM). Remarkable!
